Sulu school administrators trained on leadership, professional teacher development

Elementary school principals in Mindanao’s Sulu province are gearing up to lead the enhancement of basic education in their schools, which are lagging behind in the National Achievement Test, through training on leadership and professional teacher development, especially in English, science, and math.

USAID supports DepED's Drug Abuse Prevention Education program in Region XII

More than 100 elementary school teachers, principals, guidance counselors, and health personnel from the provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato, and the cities of Koronadal, Tacurong, and General Santos, recently attended a training seminar on Drug Abuse Prevention Education, as part of the information drive of the Department of Education (DepED) to reduce the prevalence of drug addiction in schools nationwide.

EQuALLS2 and National Book Store Foundation distribute books and learning kits to madrasah students

EQuALLS2 and partner National Book Store Foundation (NBSF) turned over books and learning kits to two madaris (Arabic schools) in Malapatan, Sarangani Province on August 12, 2010. 
 
EQuALLS2 handed over to the Bilal Bin Rabah Islamic Center and the Madrasah Al-Arabiyah Al-Islamiyah Inc. books from US-based Brother's Brother Foundation, the world's largest private donor of books from some of the world's most renowned publishers, and Merriam-Webster Elementary Dictionaries  from USAID and NBSF.

NASA Science Caravan held for 500 students at Malapatan Central Elementary School

Two engineers from the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) held a Science Caravan on August 16 for 500 elementary school students from the EQuALLS2-supported Malapatan Central Elementary School in Sarangani Province.

Roundtable Discussion on Initial Study Findings on Key Elements of Successful Workforce Development Programs Held

EQuALLS2 held a roundtable discussion with education stakeholders in Zamboanga City on the Key Elements of Successful Workforce Development Programs on August 16, 2010.
 
The key elements were identified from an innovative video research study by EQuALLS2 on what elements of its workforce development (WFD) programs for out-of-school youth (OSY) were instrumental in the youth's success in finding jobs.

EQuALLS2 consults DepED Region XII on school-based professional educator development

EQuALLS2 had a Consultation-Workshop with the Department of Education in Region XII on the school-based professional teacher development program, called the Learning Partnership Program (LPP),  from August 9 to 10, 2010 in General Santos City. 
 
Elementary school teachers and Department of Education officials from the provinces of Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, and North Cotabato, and from the cities of Kidapawan, Koronadal, Tacurong, and General Santos participated in the event.

Lutayan municipal government supports the Barangay Education Report Card system

Communities from the municipality of Lutayan in Sultan Kudarat province had a training workshop on the Barangay Education Report Card (BERC) system from July 8 to 10, 2010 in General Santos City. 
 
Fifty community representatives and local government officers participated.
 
BERC is a tool that will help communities identify and track their own indicators of in- and out-of-school education progress in their village.
