USAID Strengthened Madrasah Education for Mindanao Schoolchildren USAID supported the thrust of the Philippine Department of Education (DepED) and the DepED-ARMM Bureau of Madaris Education to strengthen madrasah (Islamic school) education for schoolchildren in Regions 9, 12, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao by orienting administrators of 11 madaris schools on DepED’s standard madrasah curriculum on August 12-13, 2009. The curriculum reflects DepED’s basic education curriculum and provides quality and culture-sensitive education to Muslim and non-Muslim learners, while recognizing the significance of Islamic education and creating uniformity in curricular offerings. USAID, through its Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuALLS2) Project, will support 20 madaris in Mindanao by 2011 by strengthening the capacities of asatidz (Islamic teachers) to teach English, science, and math and improving their learning and teaching environments.
