USAID's EQuALLS2 project helped the Department of Education (DepED) and the Bureau of Madaris Education reach out to madaris (Islamic schools) in conflict-affected regions in Mindanao by orienting administrators of nine madaris on DepED’s Madrasah Education Program on October 26-27, 2009 in Zamboanga City. The program will assist madaris to adopt a unified curriculum that is recognized as part of the national education system. DepED’s Madrasah Education Program includes the standard madrasah curriculum for private elementary madaris and public schools in Muslim communities, and basic literacy and entrepreneurship offerings for Muslim out-of-school youth. USAID, through its EQuALLS2 project, will support 20 madaris in areas most affected by conflict and poverty in Mindanao by strengthening the capacities of asatidz (Islamic teachers) to teach English, science, and math, providing relevant instructional materials, and improving learning and teaching environments.
