In support of the Department of Education’s National English Proficiency Program for all public elementary and high school teachers, the EQuALLS2 Project trained 71 madrasah (Arabic school) teachers in English proficiency in Davao City from June 1-6, 2010.

The training was part of the partnership of the Philippine and US governments to alleviate poverty in Mindanao conflict areas through improved basic education, by strengthening the teaching of English, science, and math in 741 public elementary schools and 21 madaris.

The training taught me new techniques in teaching the English language, such as activity-based instructional strategies to encourage the participation of students. It also encouraged me to regularly practice the language to become more comfortable in using it both in and outside the classroom,” said Normina Amirol, a teacher at the Ma’had Irshadil Arabie Al-Islami in Datu Saudi Uy Ampatuan, Maguindanao.
