A community health session by USAID's SHIELD project at the EQuALLS2-assisted Bilaan Elementary School in Talipao, Sulu during Brigada Eskwela week. |
As part of this year’s Brigada Eskwela or schools maintenance program to prepare schools for opening in June, EQuALLS2 launched its Health and Education Sectoral Partnership with USAID's Sustainable Health Improvements through Empowerment and Local Development (SHIELD) Project at the Bilaan Elementary School in Talipao, Sulu.
SHIELD promotes good practices on maternal and child health by mobilizing communities, health professionals, and local government units to improve health services delivery and coverage in poor communities in the ARMM.
SHIELD, together with the Tawi-Tawi Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) and Regional Health Unit (RHU) nurses, set up a health booth that provided basic medical and dental consultation and services such as height and weight taking, and immunizations on oral polio vaccine (OPV) and bacillus calmette guerrin (BCG) for schoolchildren.
A community session was also organized where community health action teams held an information drive on basic health education.
The Philippine Armed Forces (AFP) also provided hygiene consultation for the communities.
