The EQuALLS2 Project trained 63 teachers from 21 madaris ("schools" in Arabic) in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao on basic science on August 27 to 31 in Zamboanga City.
The training was designed to improve the competitiveness of the madaris vis-a-vis formal schools, through their adoption of the Department of Education's Standard Madrasah Curriculum that highlights English, science, and math teaching.
The training particularly enhanced the teachers’ competence in teaching elementary science concepts and in developing their Muslim students' thinking/process skills. It strengthened their knowledge of both content and teaching strategies, with emphasis on processing of students’ answers and the results of activities.
The training modules were developed by the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED), and further reviewed by the Philippine Department of Education and teacher education institutions to suit the needs of the madrasah teachers.
