USAID’s EQuALLS2 project encouraged the participation of local communities in increasing access to quality education in Mindanao by training 45 members of four barangays from Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat on April 19-24, 2010 to track their local education improvement with Barangay (village) Education Report Cards (BERCs).
Barangay officials, members of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), teacher representatives, and school heads formulated their barangay’s vision for education.
They learned how to set up a BERC system by defining their local education status through collected data, identifying their own indicators of improved education for in- and out-of-school children and youth, and using such indicators to track their progress in implementing education projects.
They will share their learnings with other members of their communities and then set up and pilot-test their BERCs.
EQuALLS2 is supporting 850 PTAs and other school governance structures in increasing access to quality education until 2011.
Also on April 21-25, 2010, 30 administrators and PTA representatives of five madaris (Arabic schools) from Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat gathered in General Santos City to learn how to prepare project proposals and mobilize and manage resources.
USAID is helping 21 madaris in Mindanao align their education standards and programs with those of regular schools by adopting DepED’s Standard Madrasah Curriculum, strengthening teaching and school management, and pursuing education enhancement projects.
