USAID director turns over madrasah education support in Mindanao

USAID Director of Bureau for East Asian Affairs (ANE/EAA) Frederic Scott turned over $1,000 worth of audio-visual teaching equipment and 265 reference books to the madrasah (Arabic school) Hadji Mahmud Isa Jammang (HMIJ) Philippine Islamic College Foundation, Inc. in Zamboanga City during his visit to Mindanao on June 11, 2010.

 

 
On the same day, USAID turned over construction materials and equipment for school repair and books to the Islamic Institute of the Philippines.
 
USAID, through its Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuALLS2) Project, is helping strengthen English, science, and math teaching in 21 madaris in Mindanao by facilitating their adoption of the Department of Education’s Standard Madrasah Curriculum, training teachers, and providing resources for education improvements.
 
The madrasah assistance is on top of the project’s assistance to 741 public elementary schools in conflict areas in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Regions IX and XII.
 
During the turnover, Scott reiterated the Obama Administration’s strong support for education enhancement worldwide.
