On July 2, 2010, USAID signed a Memorandum of Agreement with nine institutions of higher learning in Central Mindanao and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Provincial Office of Lanao del Sur and Marawi City for the delivery of one of college/university education or skills training for 42 Mindanao out-of-school youth (OSY), under the scholarship program of USAID's Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuALLS2) Project.
The scholarship program aims to increase the employability of the OSY who had passed the Accreditation & Equivalency (A&E) exam of the Department of Education for qualification as high school graduates, after they have completed the EQuALLS2 A&E program.
Four of the youth will study Education and Information Technology under a one-year college scholarship, and the rest will take higher-level technical-vocational courses on industry-needed skills.
The scholarship program covers tuition and miscellaneous fees, training and assessment fees, basic starter tools, board and lodging as needed, a daily allowance, and post-training employment assistance in partnership with local agencies and institutions.
The scholarship program is in addition to USAID’s alternative basic education and livelihood skills training for 105,000 out-of-school children and youth from areas most affected by conflict and poverty in Mindanao.
