USAID trained 50 Basilan and Tawi-Tawi elementary school science teachers on July 3-7, 2010 to create and assemble low-cost science equipment, using local materials for use in classroom experiments, as part of its commitment to increase access to quality education in areas most affected by conflict and poverty in Mindanao.

The training, which uses readily available local items, such as egg cartons, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, straws and paper bags, among other products, supports science instruction in provinces that suffer from limited resources and shortage of such equipment in most public schools.
