| Children helped their parents and other community members prepare the grounds at the new USAID-Petron two-classroom building in Sto. NiƱo, South Cotabato for the school opening in June. |
USAID assisted 741 public elementary schools in conflict areas in Mindanao to be more prepared for the new school year by giving small grants for community-driven school maintenance, books, and other educational materials and support during the Department of Education’s (DepED) Brigada Eskwela week from May 24 to 28, 2010.
Coordinated through the EQuALLS2 Project, all the 741 project-assisted schools received a grant of PhP5,000 and are receiving new supplementary English, science, and math books, kits, and dictionaries to accompany teacher training activities.
During Brigada Eskwela week, communities helped clean, repaint, and repair schools with USAID funds.
Additionally, the EQuALLS2 Project partnered with USAID’s Sustainable Health Improvements through Empowerment and Local Development (SHIELD) Project for the provision of basic health information and services for schoolchildren at the Bilaan Elementary School in Talipao, Sulu.
